Godfrey set as Magnecon opening keynote

It has been announced that Jonathan Godfrey will be the opening keynote speaker at the 2018 ANCC Magnet Conference, Wednesday, October 11.

Godfrey will give his award-winning “Max Impact: A Story of Survival” presentation concentrating on “resilience.”

“A board member from the ANCC contacted me who is familiar with my story and passion,” Jonathan Godfrey said. “He felt that my story would be a good match and holds an important message for the conference.”

Godfrey said it is a tradition for the opening speaker to set the tone for the conference. He said although his story has loss and heavy subject matter, he intends to send attendees into their conference with a fresh positive perspective that he hopes they carry with them throughout their career.

“I have been the rescuer and have been rescued,” Godfrey said. “I have been the trauma nurse and I have been the trauma patient.”

Godfrey said nurses focus on taking care of their patients and all too often forget to take care of themselves.

“How can you give your patient the best, when you are not at your best,” he said. “As a community and as individuals, nurses must be resilient and foster resilience.”

He said when he first became a nurse there was a different outlook. He said nurses, as well as other medical providers, had a “suck it up” mentality.

“Now, as an industry, we are learning that isn’t the best or the healthiest route for us or our patients,” he said. “We have to take care of ourselves and each other.”

He continues to travel and speak to healthcare, transport, aviation and other professionals and has recently authored a book with investigative journalist MJ Brickey.

“I am scheduled to speak at 9:45 a.m. for an hour,” Godfrey said. “MJ Brickey and I will be doing a book signing from 12:30 – 1:15 p.m. at the bookstore.”

He said he looks forward to the conference but he especially looks forward to connecting and networking with nurses and administrators from all over the world.

"ANCC organizers told me there will be approximately 10,000 people in attendance," Godfrey said. "I look forward to seeing them all."
